Everyday Natural Makeup Tutorial

A fresh, natural look is always attractive and can be worn in all seasons. This type of look is best achieved with the minimal amount of makeup, however, if you are new to applying makeup or one of those people who need to wear makeup to feel better about yourself, then here are a few easy ways to apply makeup to achieve that fresh, natural looking look.

Step 1: Cleanse

The first step to applying any type or style of makeup, whether for a natural look or a party, is to cleanse your face thoroughly and remove any previous makeup that might still be there. Squeeze some makeup remover onto a cotton ball and gently rub your face until all residue of makeup and dirt has been removed.

Expert tip! If you suffer from problem skin, use a gentle exfoliator to cleanse your skin to get a super clean and smooth palette ready for your makeup application.

Step 2: Moisturize

Applying moisturizer to your face before makeup application is crucial as this hydrates the skin and forms an excellent base for the makeup. Use your regular moisturizer and apply it normally, ensuring your skin is fully hydrated when done. If you suffer from oily skin, an oil-free moisturizer is best as this will give you a beautiful matte and shine-free finish once the makeup is applied.

Expert tip! For a more natural look use a tinted moisturizer instead of using foundation. Tinted moisturizers usually contain SPF, which is essential if you are out and about in the sun during the day and help to even out skin tone.

Step 3: Apply Concealer

Next step is to remove any blemishes from around your eyes and this is done by applying concealer. There are a variety of concealers that can be used, from liquid and pencil concealer to stick and cream concealers.  The most important aspect of concealer is to ensure that the color is correct and matches your skin tone. Apply concealer to the darker spots around and below your eyes – avoid using it on the spot or blemish as this can create a ‘halo’ effect. A well-applied concealer can minimize the amount of foundation needed, which helps achieve that beautiful, natural look.

Expert tip! Avoid using too much concealer – only use it on blemishes and spots where necessary.

Step 4: Apply Foundation

Foundation is the next phase in the process and here it is vital that the color of the foundation is correct as you want to achieve the look of not wearing foundation at all. Using a makeup sponge or your fingertips, gently dab the foundation in dots on areas on your face and gently blend in, making sure you go beneath the jawline to avoid look like you are wearing a mask.

Expert tip! For an ultra-smooth look, use a makeup sponge to blend the foundation in after applying.

Step 5: Apply Bronzer or Blush

Give yourself a natural glow by applying some bronzer or blush – but never both! Using a brush, lightly sweep some bronzer or blush along your cheekbones for a natural, sun-kissed look. People will pale skin should avoid using bronzer as if applied incorrectly, it can make you look overdone.

Expert tip! For a dewy, long-lasting look, use crème blush.

Step 6: Apply Eye Makeup

  1. Eyeliner – line your upper lash line with eyeliner in a soft roasted-colored gel or liquid liner such as brown or gray and smudge gently with a cotton bud to create a natural look. Avoid using black eyeliner as this can be too harsh.
  2. Eyeshadow – Use two soft, natural shades of eyeshadow depending on your skin tone and blend the colors in well on your upper lid – applying the light, neutral tone all over the lid and the slightly darker tone to outline the crease.
  3. Mascara – Apply ONE layer of mascara to add some color without overdoing it. For a fresh, dewy look, curl your eyelashes before applying mascara.

Step 7: Apply Lip Makeup

The final step in applying natural looking makeup is to finish off with your lips and it is important to use a sheer, nude lip color to achieve this. Avoid using shiny lip glosses or bright lipsticks – go for a color that is as close to your natural lip color as possible. Apply the lip color with a pencil or brush and dab a touch of shimmering blush onto the center of your lips for an extra glow.
