How to remove suntan from your face and body

For most people, a bit of colour in the form of a tan looks great, however, while a glowing tan can look healthy, a suntan with unwanted strap marks or streaks can be annoying and can ruin a good look. Ideally, we should all be avoiding the sun and be getting our tans from a bottle, but it is sometimes unavoidable to spend a few hours in the sun. While you cannot remove the irreversible effects and damage done to your skin by the sun, if you prefer to have a softer tan, here are a few ways that you can remove the colour you have gained from being in the sun and revert back to your original skin colour.

Removing a tan obtained from the sun

If you have been in the sun for a few hours and changes shades, there is very little you can actually do, except to wait for the tan to fade. The best bet, in this case, would be to avoid going into the sun at all, but if you have spent a few too many hours in the sun and want to tone down the shade of your skin, here are a few methods you can try.

  1. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate

    Exfoliation is a great way for sloughing the top layer of skin cells off your body, so ultimately this method could very well remove your tan at the same time. The top layers of your skin contain the melanin cells that produce the colour of a tan so by removing them, you will also remove whatever color you gained by being in the sun, leaving behind fresh new layers of skin without any colour.  Use a clean loofah and gently exfoliate with an exfoliation product or body scrub – do this twice a week for the best effect.

    Expert Tip! Be sure to exfoliate gently – hard rubbing can leave the skin red and blotchy, which will look even worse than the tan itself!

  2. Drink Plenty of Water

    It cannot be said enough how important water is for the body and this case, it even helps to get rid of a tan! Drinking sufficient amounts of water – at least 8 – 10 glasses a day will keep your skin hydrated and will allow it to work at optimal capacity in the production of new skin cells, thus helping the old tan to fade at a faster rate. This might not be the quickest way to get rid a tan, but it is undoubtedly the healthiest. Use a good moisturiser along with drinking water to keep the skin as hydrated as possible, which will also help.

    Expert Tip! Keep a big bottle of water at your desk and next to your bed to remind you to keep drinking water throughout the day.

  3. Try a Skin Lightening Product

    Another method you could try is a skin lightening product, which works towards reducing the amount of melanin in your skin, which in turn, will help reduce the colour and depth of your tan. These products, however, contain harmful bleaching agents, though, so be sure to consult a doctor or skin specialist before using them as they could have an adverse effect on your skin and body.

  4. Prevention is Better than Cure!

    As with most things in life, prevention is better than cure, and preventing getting a tan altogether will save you from having to try and get rid of it! The best thing to do is cover your skin when going out into the sun, especially during times of the day when the sun is at its strongest, such as midday. Wear long sleeve shirts and long pants in cool fabrics if the temperature is warm and make you’re your sun hat is significant enough to cover both your face, neck and décolletage area. Make sure to wear sunscreen of at least an SPF factor 30 every day and re-apply continuously throughout the day if you are in the sun.

Removing a Fake Tan:-

Removing a ‘fake’ tan from a bottle is slightly easier than eliminating a real tan from the sun and there are some quick and easy ways to do it.

1. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate:  Exfoliation is the fastest and simplest way to remove a fake tan as the sloughing off of the top layers of skin will eliminate the coloured skin cells, leaving you with fresh, clean, tanless skin. Use a clean loofah and good body scrub product to exfoliate twice a week in the shower for the best effect, but remember to be gentle when rubbing to avoid redness and blotchiness.

2. Get Steamy: Hit the steam room for a session – this is not only an excellent way of relax but also an excellent way of removing your fake tan as the hot steam cases the pores to open and releases the tanning product. Relax in the steam room for at least 30 minutes and then rub yourself down gently with a towel so find your skin tan-free!
